Whatcha watchin?

Early fall brings many good things, nestled in among the bad. For me, the negatives are shorter days, increasingly cooler temperatures and more time spent indoors than out. The positives are many: more time for reading (another blog topic to come), more time for writing, more quiet time for introspection and hopefully growth after the wonderfully manic pace of summer.

One of my favorite things about early fall is the start of the new T.V. season. I know it sounds shallow, and it probably is, but I LOVE good visual storytelling and recently T.V. has gone from good to really great, better even than most of the movies I’ve seen in the last year. I thought I’d share some of my favorite shows with you and hear what you love to curl up with in your down time.

I just started a new series from PBS called: “Last Tango in Halifax“. It is about two people who reconnect on FaceBook after a failed date sixty years before. It stars Derek Jacobi, who is wonderful and has a cast of really messed up family members who threaten this new love that’s actually been decades in the making. I’ve only seen two episodes, but they’ve been great. I love quirky families and these characters don’t disappoint.Image

Foyle’s War is back and it has some of the best writing and acting on T.V. Michael Kitchen is a master and Honeysuckle Weeks is captivating. For those of you who like WWII period pieces and mysteries, this is great.

I’ve also enjoyed Ripper Street and am looking forward to the new season. It’s set in Jack the Ripper’s London, but it’s not really about him. There are three main male characters and the interplay among them is what makes the show for me. Watching Mathew McFadden is no hardship, either.

Since I started with the Brits, here’s some more worth seeing if you get a chance: “Inspector Lewis” is set in Oxford, is well written and the relationship between Lewis and his younger partner, Hathaway, is often wickedly funny; for those of you who enjoy cozy mysteries, “Rosemary & Thyme” is easy to get hooked on; “Sherlock” is FANTASTIC! I can’t wait for that to begin again, although I’ll be waiting until the new year. The writing and acting in SHERLOCK has no peer. It’s that good.

Now onto American and Canadian T.V. I really enjoyed the first season of “Newsroom” a lot. I loved the fast pace, the odd, yet uniformly genuine, characters. I’m still loving “Supernatural” after so many seasons, probably because it’s one of those shows my son and I share an affinity for.  We watched the pilot for “Sleepy Hollow” and although I’m not sold yet, I’m hopeful for the promise of where it could go. “Person of Interest” is intriguing. I didn’t think anyone, no matter how good the writer, could get me to empathize with artificial intelligence, but these writers have. I also like looking at Jim Caviezel. Who knew he had a sense of comedic timing? “Strike Back” is great if you’re into international espionage thrillers, which I am. Both of the male leads are continual eye candy, but it’s the surprises that make this show special. And for those of you who like westerns, and who if they’re honest doesn’t, “Longmire” just gets better with every episode.

The new show I’m most looking forward to is: S.H.I.E.L.D written by Joss Whedon! I love his writing and am so happy Agent Coulson is back among the living. He made the Avengers movie for me. Hope this new show is as good. FIREFLY was one of the all time greats in my opinion and still has a loyal fan base. If you haven’t seen it, it’s on NetFlix, check it out!

Shameless Plug……..I’m excited to watch the second season of VIKINGS from the History channel. I enjoyed the look and the feel of the show as much as the acting, the writing and the story lines. It isn’t due out until winter 2014, which is excellent for me because I’m currently working on a Scottish historical set during the Viking period in Scotland, circa 900AD. I’m loving the story and hoping that the second season of VIKINGS helps draw interest!

So, what do you love to watch? What are you most interesting in seeing this fall? What about T.V. grabs your imagination and holds on? I’d love to hear about some shows I haven’t discovered yet!

  1. Fall is just the opposite for me. It’s a time I can finally get back outside after the oppressive heat of summer. The shorter days mean I don’t feel guilty about working fewer hours. I have this thing where I think I need to be working when the sun is up. I do have to be careful to take my vitamin D supplements, though. As for TV, I watch the crime dramas–NCIS, CSI, The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, Numb3ers, etc. I don’t watch reality TV–ever–and I’m not big on the British shows. Can’t stand modern sitcoms or game shows. So TV kind of sucks for me.

    • Hey, Tori, I love NCIS. I’m also liking the newer show Perception. I’m glad you enjoy time outside in the fall. It’s beautiful here today and hopefully will be through October. I sure miss the longer days though! I do get the not feeling guilty when you stop working when it gets dark, I guess I just never looked at it that way before. Thanks!

  2. I forgot about Last Tango in Halifax. We watched the first episode, but I forgot and didn’t watch the second one. I am looking forward to NCIS and a few others, but I’m also getting tired of all the crime shows. I’m determined to watch more comedies. Last night we watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a 1/2 hour precinct comedy, and enjoyed it. I like The Big Bang Theory a lot. I also like The Voice, and will watch that. This cuts into my writing time!

    • I haven’t seen any of those comedies, Edie. I don’t usually watch shoes when they are on network T.V., I wait and see them on NetFlix, or if I really love it I download them from Amazon so I can watch them anytime. It doesn’t really cut into writing for me, because I watch after I’m done for the day. I also miss all those commercials! I’ve heard Big Bang Theory is hilarious…I’ll be checking that out. You can watch LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX on PBS. I have a Roku box and the PBS channel is available so I can watch it anytime for free. I really like that :), especially when I can’t sleep. You can probably watch it on-line.

  3. You mentioned several of my favorites. I have Halifax DVRd but haven’t seen it yet. Jacobi is always good. Love Person of Interest — in fact I like just about any crime drama that’s well done. Since I write romantic comedy, I guess the crime thrillers give me a dramatic break. Have you seen Wire in the Blood starring Robson Green who is now on Strike Back? Green is an amazing actor. He plays Dr. Tony Hill on Wire in the Blood, a shrink with a keen insight into the mind of killers. It’s on NetFlix.

  4. Ooohhh, Joan, how could I forget Wire in the Blood???? Love it. And you’re right, Robson Green is fantastic! He was also in Touching Evil which I liked as well, but not as much as Waking the Dead. Makes me sound so blood-thirsty…Is season 3 of Strike Back out? I think you’ll enjoy LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX. There’s a great scene where the respective daughters meet that I really enjoyed.

  5. Canadian shows that you might not have seen – Republic of Doyle (P.I. show set in NFLD) and Murdoch Mysteries (Victorian era). Also Big Bang Theory, Whose Line is It Anyway, Dancing with the Stars, Who Do You Think You Are, and from the U.K. The White Queen.

      • Susan, I caught an episode (3 actually) of Republic of Doyle…what a great show! I was really impressed that the lead actor is also a co-creater and producer for this series. Love the interplay between father and son. Thanks again for the find :).

    • I haven’t seen Cedar Cove yet. I’m one of those who watch when I can’t sleep or right before I go to sleep with a timer on the T.V. so I can fall asleep and it sets itself off. Cedar Cove hasn’t made its way to NetFlix yet and the pilot wasn’t free on Amazon.

      • I should have asked if you like it! I like late-night too and I’ll watch Jon Stewart on Hulu some early mornings. Lately I’ve been catching The Week with Charlie Rose on the PBS Channel of Roku as well. No commercials and it’s free after buying the box.

  6. I’m not much of a TV person and watch only the News and the very old shows. Give me Everybody Loves Raymond or Seinfeld or Two and a Half Man any time. Fall means serious writing and more indoor time, return to the gym and starting thinking holidays.

    • Mona, I’m with you on the return to serious writing. I’m doing more reading now too, which I love. You’re motivating me to do more training…I slacked more than a little in the dojo this summer! 🙂

  7. OOOhhhhh, I watched an EXCELLENT Pilot today. I usually troll Amazon for free T.V. just to see what’s new. Today I watched the Pilot of BLACKLIST free on Amazon — wish more Pilots were free because ultimately I buy the season if I love it — and I LOVED this one. James Spader is creepy in an I-want-to-help kind of way that’s intriguing and off-putting at the same time. Can’t wait to see where this show goes. Most Intriguing New Show I’ve seen so far this season. In fact it’s the most compelling pilot I’ve seen in years. Check it out!
