Impatience? Learning Patience?

landscape-1457095032-woman-icing-inflamed-kneeI injured my knee in karate weapons class – not a bad injury, as injuries go. I won’t require surgery if I do what I’m told by my doctor. Still, I’m sidelined for awhile.

In karate, I can wait. I know a few weeks won’t change who I am and what I can do. I’ve been at it for 27 years. So, I’m looking at the big picture, not the inconvenient few weeks picture. Therefore, I am more patient and can wait.

I took Ballet in college because I had to. The karate classes were full and I needed art and activity credits to graduate.

I hated it.

It was one of those “beginners” classes where the stars of the class were taking it for the third or fourth time, and the rest of us simply didn’t measure up. Nonsense really, but graded nonsense.

My ballet class now isn’t that. It is filled with a mix of wonderful people who aren’t trying to show everyone else how great they are – they’re just dancing. Most of them are Latin dancers trying to improve their movement for their dance of choice.

I’m in it for the ballet. For the grace. For the strength. For the poise. Waiting and watching is making me itch – I want to get back even knowing how much catching -up I’ll need to do to be ready for our group performance.

When it comes right down to it, I guess what I like most is being an active part of this community of dancers. They are focused on themselves – but also on the group.

Karate is an individual endeavor. Control of self is key.

I love both – I’m just itching to get back, and realize that patience is not a disease inflicted only on the young.

    • Thanks, Joan! I’ve been doing what I’m told and feeling stronger because of it. Ready to get back to my activities—although no twisting movements for another 6-8 weeks. Happy to hear from you. Hope you and your family are well!


  1. I’m so sorry about your injury. Wishing you a quick recovery and no serious long term problems from it.

    Patience” What’s that? I’ve never had much of it. I hate waiting.

    I took ballet as an adult. I had it for years as a kid and then the studio owner moved away. End of my great childhood ballerina visions. Actually I watched friends go to pointe but not me. They said I wasn’t grown enough. So when I took it again as an adult, after watching my girls doing it, it was easy for me to pick up and back then, I was still rather flexible. But what I liked about it was just the stretching and it gave me an hour twice a week that I wasn’t a mommy. I was me and my body. It was something I was doing for me and it felt good. (The girls were safe, they were in other classes in that studio.) I promise, no one was actually good at dancing. We’d just laugh and try again. But stop dancing for a few weeks and it’s hard to get back that same flex. It did not make me more graceful, coordinated, or anything else. It just made me feel good. 🙂

    • I love ballet too, E.! The stretching is a great reason to enjoy it. No one does pointe in our studio. Our teacher doesn’t like what it does to women’s feet, so we dance in ballet slippers. Ballet with a modern mix. It’s a hoot!


  2. I’ve never been a dancer. I envy those who can. It’s funny, but when I was young, my favorite dance was the polka. Not that I liked the music (because it’s awful) but because it was mostly skipping around. And if I had a strong partner, they pretty much just carried me.

    • Kristy, I tend to try and lead when I dance with a partner. I’m working on it! Every form of dance is an expression of who we are inside. I’d be very pleased with skipping around with a folk dance like the polka—energy and exuberance are underrated. Grin.


    • I love to watch too, Susan. Especially ballet and salsa. You don’t have to be good at any kind of dance to enjoy it. I do think a good teacher who helps you feel comfortable helps a lot. If you want to dance, go for it!
