Change is the only constant

This has been a big year for changes around my house. I’m writing less, working outside of the home, and still trying to keep the best seller dream alive!

The book business is not for the faint of heart. Luckily, I’m not deterred – only slowed down a bit! 😀

The things that used to work to promote books – don’t. As authors we are constantly looking for the next thing, the next advertising avenue, the next blog or marketplace to share our work. The problem is that often if your book isn’t on trend; like the wave of NA that hit for a while or the new Step Brother trope, it’s hard to find readers. We all have to make the business decision on whether we want to write what’s hot or write what we like best. Right now, I’ve decided to write what I feel is best suited to me. Mistake or not, it’s what I feel best doing.

You can try and write to the market or you can wait for the market to swing back around to your focus. So, I wait! Okay, that’s not entirely true…I work on my craft and get some writing in and then I sort of wait! 😀 For readers to try something new, by that I mean a new author. And hope it’s me or one of my Main Street friends.

As for the rest of life, parenting is not for the faint of heart either. My son will spend his last few days in middle school this month and transition into High School this September. I tear up thinking about it, because change even when it’s good, can sting the old heart a bit. I can’t believe he’s gotten this big, while I haven’t aged a day. 😜

Life, well it just keeps moving along. My new “day job” has offered me new and bold character ideas. My son growing up has offered me new reasons to panic and worry, but also a vast number of reasons to be proud. Change is the only constant…let it not stop you in your tracks, but rather embrace it and see where the change takes you.

Wishing you all an amazing June, at the same time, I can’t believe it’s already June! Let this summer take you away and change your life in every possible good way it can.

Wishing you well, in fiction and real life!

Springing into Step

My Office

My Office

The business of writing, is often a lot less fun, than actually writing. I know when I was younger and dreamt of making this my life’s work; I assumed I would sit at a desk, write best-sellers, occasionally setting out on a world book tour, all the while my minions would take care of the rest.

Joke is on me it seems:

1. A best-seller has yet to jump out of my laptop. (Not that I’ve given up hope).

2. Promotion costs a ridiculous amount of money, which would be a lot easier were #1 a reality!

3. Minions cost even more money than promo and so again I ask that you please refer to #1.

4. Social Media was not even in the picture when I was 12, so it never occurred to me how much work would be involved in staying “social”. It’s intense.🙈

For now, while I work on the three most pressing stories in my head & wait for edits on my next two books- I at least want to do it some place warm and cozy and where it feels a lot less like work. Writing itself doesn’t feel like work, but the rest of the branding and marketing, sure as heck does. And I’m a Sales & Marketing person by trade. Somehow, selling my own wares is a lot more stressful than selling someone else’s. Isn’t that something? LOL

Thank goodness for warm spring days, cool drinks and a deck with a gorgeous view!

I hope everyone else is enjoying their day as much as I am.

Wishing you well in fiction & real life,

Kelly Rae

Ebb & Flow

The perks of owning your own business are plentiful; like making your own schedule and generally liking your boss! 😀  People don’t always understand or see being a writer as a business. Granted, some of my work is sold through a publisher, but even with a publisher there is a business side that is all mine. Either way, it all begins and ends w/ me! This is both a blessing and a curse.

2015 was a rough year for the industry. Small publishers began closing their doors; including Samhain, which will close this year. And sales that were once soaring have tapered or plummeted, for some. The lucky ones have seen a slow enough decline to react in one way or another – like a “day job”. Which I have returned to, sadly!

It’s funny how you forget office politics when you’re used to working alone. Or how co-workers can be quirky, for lack of a nicer term! I’ve started consulting for a tech firm, in the Sales &Marketing department. The Tech part is new to me, but I built a nice life and career in Sales & Marketing – before writing.

So while book sales ebb, I’m taking an opportunity for new character development via the workforce. I’ve already met several interesting people who I’m certain will find their way into personalities or full blown characters in a novel coming soon! It’s also giving me a chance to learn about a new industry.

I will take this ebb in stride, create some new opportunities and develop a new portfolio of interesting characteristics. Hey, maybe I’ll be the first writer to make an engineer sexy! 😍 Either way as long as the ideas and words flow, a little ebb can be dealt with. Lord, let it be a quick ebb! Here’s to new adventures!

Wishing you well, in fiction and real life!

Here is the reality of being a writer:

I’ve seen numbers floating around about the top 10% are making it, or only those in KU (which is VERY restrictive for authors) are making it, to basically unless you’re Stephen King or Jodi Picoult, no one is making it! 😀 What you can do is support your favorite small business & writer with reviews and word of mouth advertising. Every little bit helps! 😘

Books & Vegas!

Here’s the thing about Las Vegas, it’s proof that you actually CAN have too much of a good thing! 😀 Exhausting!

Earlier this month I went to my first book signing, as a signing author. I was both nervous and excited for this event. I got to Vegas a few days early to enjoy the town and catch a few shows. My favorite was Jersey Boys, at the Paris Hotel & Casino. This show was FANtastic and I recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in Vegas. MUST SEE❗️

After two days of good times with friends, it was time to buckle down and spend time with my publishing house, editor, and fellow Forever Red Authors. Okay… we goofed off a little, before the work started. We walked the strip, saw Zumanity (another superb show), and maybe went to a show where a lot of men speak Australian. 🙈

Eventually, it was time to get to work and attend the signing. I had such an amazing time meeting new readers and authors. There were also a few cover models in the room and I have to admit they did take a little attention away from the authors; even if they were instructed to keep their shirts on. (No, seriously, it was announced before the start that they had to wear their shirts! 😝)

Five hours, several signed copies sold, a lot of really amazing people at my table,  and I managed to get through my first signing. Such a great feeling and experience. Every new step in my career is a reason to celebrate, although mostly I was just tired. 💤 There is so much to do and see in Vegas, that the last day I really only wanted coffee and a good read, by one of the new authors I’d met at the signing!

The week did have an added bonus, because Books One & Two of the Series I was signing,One Day at a Wedding, released and a cover reveal went out for a follow up novella to the series, Call Me Yours❣The entire week was a huge succes and a lot of fun, but, and I hate to say it, I was beyonf ready to head home and sleep when it was all over. LOL

Since then, Call Me Yours, released and I am getting amazing feedback on the series! It’s always encouraging when people enjoy the work. If you’d like to check out the series with little to no commitmen, lol, there is a prequel that’s FREE. See the series links below for all 4 stories that make up my One Day at a Wedding Series❗️

Once Upon a Wedding:

Cassie Anderson, bridesmaid extraordinaire, is tired of attending her friend’s weddings either solo, or with her best friend, Thad. Finding a real date is simply too much work. Especially when she sees an old acquaintance from high school, Dan, at her friend Shelley’s wedding. After the spark shared between them, Dan has become the object of her affection. Too bad he has a nasty habit of having a date on his arm at every turn. Stealing another woman’s date is against the rules, but if she could just catch him at an event alone…well, that would be fair game! Unfortunately, timing is everything, and she and Dan seem to have the worst. Always the bridesmaid, walking away with nothing more than a dreadful dress,
Cassie is committed to changing her luck and getting her man.
Dan daydreamed about Cassie Anderson through most of his high school classes. She barely knew he was alive – but that didn’t stop him from wanting her for all those years. Unfortunately, her return to his life comes at the worst time possible. As he tries to put his life back together, he keeps an eye on her, hoping to find her single at the right time. A time when it all hurts a bit less. A time when he can offer her all of the love she deserves. After three weddings of happenstance meetings, Dan finds himself to be a little more ready for everything that is Cassie. Putting himself out there, he can only hope she is everything he thinks she might be — his forever girl.

Anything but a Wedding:

Thad never expected to find anyone who meant more to him than his best friend, Cassie. She was the one woman he loved enough not to sleep with. He was a player, but an honest one. Unfortunately, not everyone felt that balanced out his love ’em and leave ’em ways. He just didn’t see a need to settle down — yet. Then, he met Brianna, who made him think about the future — a future with her — which was a new experience for Thad. Brianna is also a new kind of woman and convincing her that they have a future might just be the challenge of his life.
Brianna works through men like she works through her closet — seasonally. Any other way has always been trouble. When she meets Thad, she is thrilled. Not only does he intrigue and excite her, but he is just like her — noncommittal. He sets her on fire with his smooth talk and honest approach to dating. Even without being physical beyond a kiss, the thought of him makes her entire body hum. Except, Thad has gone and gotten attached to her in a way neither of them expected; attached in a way she simply cannot allow. Unfortunately, he won’t allow their relationship to become physical until she surrenders her heart to him, which is a battle she isn’t sure she can win. The longer it lasts, the less sure she becomes of wanting it to.

🌟Call Me Yours: Cover Reveal 1.14.16 😝

From Once Upon a Wedding –

“Cassie. Cassie, did you see who’s here?” Shelley tugged at her skirt, trying to get her attention directed toward the back of the church.

“What’s the matter with you?” she asked Shelley and then turned to face the back of the church. “Ohh, now I see what you mean.”

“And yet, you ignored me,” Thad said from the other side.

She just blew him off with a wave. He would get over it in two seconds or less anyway.

There he stood, looking as dapper as a GQ cover. His suit was a very nice shade of blue, with a white shirt and what appeared to be a pinstripe tie. By the time Shelley had gotten her attention, he had already selected a pew and scooted by people for a seat. The most important thing Cassie noticed was his lack of a date.

Who doesn’t take their fiancée to a wedding?

This could be a good sign. Of course, she would have to do some more investigating before she determined whether he had a single status at this point, or remained affianced. It then dawned on her that she, herself, had brought a date to the wedding. She took her eyes off Dan long enough to glance over at Thad, currently very busy staring at the legs of the woman next to him.

Boy, can I pick ‘em. Even my pretend boyfriends are losers.

“Thad, do you think you could be a little more discrete about your appreciation for our neighbor there?” she asked through gritted teeth, trying to keep her disdain to a low roar.

“Oh, shit, I’m sorry Cassie. But did you see her calves? I swear, it’s just a professional thing,” he said this with the gigolo grin, his specialty, one that hardly ever worked on Cassie. Hardly ever.

“If this is where you tell me how you’re a critic and you were just admiring her legs in a professional manner, don’t bother,” Cassie uttered in her most stern, yet quiet, voice. “You critique the arts, Thad, her legs are not performing.”

“I could argue that point, but seeing how your face is scrunching up at me, I won’t. You’re right, I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.”

Thad did his best to appear remorseful and even went so far as to kiss her forehead and squeeze her hand. She did not squeeze back.

To Cassie’s way of thinking, the fact that he had been holding her hand the whole time, including while checking out the lady’s legs next to them, made it a little worse. What could she say, though, considering she had been waiting and hoping for the appearance of another man?

She turned her head and caught Dan glancing in her direction. His mouth immediately curved up into a smile and he waved in Cassie’s direction. Cassie returned the smile and raised her left hand to reciprocate the wave, realizing she’d brought Thad’s hand along with her. Making it obvious that she had brought a date to the wedding, she immediately dropped Thad’s hand. Too late. She knew Dan had seen already.

Damn it!

Wishing you well in fiction and real life,

I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date…

The word for this last quarter, of 2015, is overwhelming! In all aspects of life I am overwhelmed, so I am a day late and several dollars short for my monthly post, here on Main Street! My apologies and now …my post!

I will be attending my first book signings in January. I am very excited and a little nervous to be setting out on this new adventure. My first stop will be in Dallas for a SOLD OUT event, hosted by the Southern Belles Book Blog, called Holidays with the Belles. Not only will I be signing books, but Colleen Hoover will be there and so I get to Fangirl, as well. (Jan. 9th)

The following weekend I will be in Las Vegas for the Rock and Read Author Event, hosted by Summer’s Book Blog. My publisher, Forever Red Publishing, is one of the sponsors for the event and many of the writers with my imprint will be attending. So, this one is even more exciting, because I get to meet ladies with whom I’ve become friends – but never met in person. Exciting! (Jan 15-17)

At both events I will be signing my revamped, One Day at a Wedding Series. These books have been spiffed up inside and out; with content changes, format changes, and amazing new covers by The Killion Group! I am very excited to show these new books and sign for fans. The first book in the series, Once Upon a Wedding, is the 2015 Pinacle Book Acheivement Award Winner in its category! I am so honored and excited to place stickers on the covers for this award!

Between the signings and the re-release of my One Day at a Wedding Series, I have so much to look forward to at the start of the New Year. Which, by the way, still sounds overwhelming 😀 but in a good way!

Keep an eye out on my website and social media pages, the 17th of this month for my cover reveal for Once Upon a Wedding and Anything but a Wedding! Both full length books release on 01.12.2016!

AND I’m excited to announce there will be a prequel novella to the series, as well as a sexier novella to liven up your Valentine’s Day this year; featuring the best book boyfriend of the series, Thad.

So much ahead and so much to look forward to, I am more than ready for 2016! I hope the balance of this year is blessed for all of our Main Street friends, like you there reading this post. I also wish for new and wonderful adventures for you all, in the New Year.

Anyone that wants to come out and see me in Vegas, even if it’s just an excuse to go to Vegas 😝 tickets are still available, through eventbrite, for the Rock & Read Author Event! See the link below!

Wishing you well in life and fiction, as well as a Happy Holiday Season!

Musical Genres

I’ve spent the bulk of my career writing Contemporary Romance, which I love. It’s treated me well, here on Main Street, and in my other ventures. I’ve been told a time or two that I should try a different genre, that my voice and my phrasing lends itself to historicals.
So, I have decided to leap into a historical storyline that has captivated me. It’s been so refreshing to my little soul, taking me to new places in my writing that are exciting and rejuvenating.

Many authors write in more than one genre, some using a different name for each. I haven’t gotten far enough into that side of things yet, although I don’t think I’ll use a different name. My historical still has romance as the overall theme, so I don’t think I’ll need a new name. (Plus, pen names can be a real pain the butt to keep up w/ – extra social media accounts, email accounts, websites, etc.)

I’ve always read historicals, but never given them much thought, as a potential option for me as a writer. Now, I feel like I’ve really found a niche that is going to serve me well and make me happy. And hopefully, people will respond, buy, and enjoy this new adventure when I’m done.

For now, I’m working on two other books, one in edits with my publisher and one which is in first draft for a series that will start next year, also with my publisher, Forever Red Publishers. It looks to be a very busy summer and for now my little historical than could, and will, is making all the rest of my writing easier; it’s making it fun and exciting again.

I think I see why there are so many authors who play the musical genre game – it sure gets your blood flowing for the art of writing again. At least it has for me!

Some of my favorite historicals are written by Eloisa James, Johanna Lindsey and Amanda Quick. What are some of your favorite books and authors that aren’t sweet, contemporary romances?!

These works are inspiring and make me long for a time long gone. I only hope my future endeavor into this world does the same for a reader someday!

If your of the mind, look up these ladies and play a little game of musical genres, along with me! 😀 Be sure to comment and share your thoughts on authors who write more than one genre; historicals in particular or if you do read one of these ladies – you must share your love for them with us here! ❤️

Wishing you well, in fiction and real life.

Wedding Season Sale & Giveaway

ODaaW 99cent sale

Now, that June has arrived, Wedding Season has begun. We will all be invited to or hear about this wedding or that, as new couples take a leap of faith and promise to share their lives together.

I love just about everything involved with weddings. Every aspect has the chance to be creative and set a tone for a couples entire day. I could say it sets the tone for their life together, but that seems dramatic. Unless of course, you find yourself fighting and disagreeing on wedding day details, then maybe some further consideration should be taken into a lifelong commitment. 😛

From high budget to backyard vow exchanges, the day can be special and beautiful for everyone. I have no plans to get married again, but if I ever did I have watched enough bridal TV to know what I would want in a wedding; from the gown to the table centerpieces I have a clear picture. I could plan a wedding in no time. Hmmmm….maybe I can have a wedding without the actual marriage, LOL!

All joking aside, weddings are a beautiful moment in time where two love birds ask you to sit in witness of their life and commitment to one another. What an amazing concept and beautiful moment for the couple and their guests. In my newest release with, Forever Red Publishing, I took a few friends, turned some of them into lovers and some of them into combatants and sent them to a couple of weddings to see how guests behave when they are more focused on their own love stories than the bride and groom.

Writing these books was so much fun, because even though they are novellas, I told each couples story from both POV’s and really got to care and love them (Thad is my fav) a little more each book. There is some overlap between the books, which were originally sold separately, because I am telling one couples story from each side. I hope that you will pick up a copy and get to know Cassie, Dan, Thad, and Brianna. They will make you fall for them this Wedding Season, as they fall for each other. My publisher has placed the entire set on sale for ONLY #99cents, until June 15th, 2015 – no better time to get a copy, as it’s normally $3.50. (each book is still available separately, for 99cents each)

There is also a BONUS STORY in this set, detailing how Cassie and Thad met and became an exception to the rule that men and women can’t be friends. Thad is a rake, albeit and honest and kind one, so it does seem odd that he would have a female best friend. But, once you meet them you will see how amazing their friendship and love for one another truly is…I adore their friendship, it might be my favorite relationship in the series!

We would love to hear about your favorite fictional wedding, whether it be a book or a movie; maybe Four Weddings and a Funeral or My Best Friend’s Wedding. Leave a comment with your favorite wedding tale and why you love it so much to be entered to win an eBook copy of my, One Day at a Wedding Series. This giveaway will stay open until June 10th and a winner will be randomly selected and sent their copy, via email, within a few days! 🙂

Writer Problems…What’s Your Name Again?

There are a lot of issues that strike authors throughout their career. Deadlines, an over active imagination, days where a story you aren’t even working on interrupts your WIP or days when not a single person living in your head wants to come out to play. So, from writer’s block to multiple personalities – we all have issues.

Recently, I have developed a new tick, of sorts. It is a regular part of my job to create people, to decide what they look like, their mannerisms and silly quirks, and then I name them. Whatever I want to call them, so shall it be!

Thad - Teaser 1This is Thad, he is a smooth talker and a loyal friend. He has a crooked smile and what some might call a devilish grin; all held together with a heart of pure gold and a wicked sense of humor! I named him. I couldn’t imagine him with any other name.

I adore him! I better get back on topic, he is distracting to say the least. 🙂

Back to my new-found problem, a lot of times when I see someone I get an idea of what their name “should” be, you know if I was writing their life. Unfortunately, this is not always the name they actually have. When I am introduced to said person, I am now having a hard time remembering their actual name and instead want to call them the name I feel suits them best. Like the kid on my son’s baseball team who looks like a Jake to me, his name is Logan. Or the high school basketball who I call Todd, even though his name is Josh. It has gotten so bad that my son now knows who I am referring to when I use their name improperly – because it happens so often. LOL

I am not saying that I prefer my imaginary world to the real world; no, no, I would never say that. 🙂 It just seems to bleed over more and more the longer I do this and the more books and characters I have under my belt!

On the bright side it makes life interesting for me and new people I meet and gives my son one more reason to shake his head at his crazy MOM! ❤ Good thing he loves me and has a good memory for names! 😛
