I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter
Songwriters: Fred E. Ahlert & Joe Young (1935)
I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I’m gonna write words oh, so sweet
They’re gonna knock me off my feet
I’ll be glad I got ’em.
I’m gonna smile and say I hope you’re feeling better
And sign with love the way you do
I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you…
We never really talk about writing or what it takes to do what we do. That’s because we figure if you are a writer there are plenty of blogs devoted to such things. We’re here for our readers, so that they get to know us a little better. But under all of it, we’re authors. We write books, specifically books with romance, because everyone needs and wants some romance in their life. And let’s face it, we’re diehard romantics.
If someone told me to pick my favorite hero from everything I’ve ever written, I’d be in trouble. Seems my favorite hero usually tends to be from my latest book. Why? Because I have to fall in love with him to write him. And writing two novels at the same time drives me crazy because in some convoluted way it’s…it’s…like…kinda…having an affair or that I’m being trapped between two lovers. And when a book is published, I feel as though I’ve lost my lover. It’s bittersweet. I’m thrilled it’s published and hurt that I’ve lost that hero. I had to give him away to my readers.
I lost Mark “Many Feathers” Hunter when I released A Rancher’s Woman. He was a different kind of tall, dark, and handsome. And probably not that tall, but compared to Malene, he was tall. That’s all that matters, for tall is relative. But I fell in love with him, his playfulness, his sharp mind, and his gentleness. He has all the right alpha qualities balanced with strong beta qualities. He could hand wrestle a bear and tenderly hold a newborn.
But since I gave him to the world of readers, I’ve got to find a new lover. I thought I found him. His name is Cody and he’s delicious. He’s also made some mistakes along the way. Married way too young to a woman who already had a child and that wife walked away leaving him with the children. Then he marries a woman with children and they have a set of twins. Now he’s a widow with a pack of kids that’s enough to scare off any female. He’s been great to write because he’s not that super-young hero. He’s in his late 30’s so he’s established, energetic, and he’s truly a man. He’s been through hell and back again. He is also leery of taking a chance on love and for good reasons, but he’s passionate in everything he does.
But I wrote that story for a reason, with a specific goal. It’s not tied to anything else that I’ve written, but the story is way over word count for the purpose it was intended, so Cody, just got put on hold. Three quarters of the way complete, I’ve pushed it aside and told him to wait. Wait? I just found that place where I could begin to think of him as a lover. That point where I know every luscious inch of him and I’m ready to embrace a new love.
Now I have to find a new hero. Well, I’ve found him, he’s very young with a boyish quality that will probably stay with him until he’s much older. He’s got carrot-red hair and freckles, lots of freckles. Why? I have no clue. I think I needed a 180 degree difference between him and Cody. And if I manage to pull this off, he’s going to wind up being Cody’s son-in-law. What the heck have I done? I’m feeling like Mrs. Robinson from the movie The Graduate.
I have to at least draft this new story, then I can go back and finish Cody’s. It’s not funny. I’m a one-man woman, and I’m about to have two men in my life. And carrot-red hair? Okay, there are plenty of those men on my father’s side of the family. I was little. They were big. All those men were big. Everyone was well over six foot in height. But I don’t have someone I can pull upon for looks or personality and in general, carrot-red hair has never held a great appeal to me – I think it has something to do with those big guys who were distant cousins and uncles. This should be interesting because I’ve got to create a hero so wonderful and sexy that everyone is going to fall in love with him including me. Oh my!
And that somehow brings me back to the song. As a romance author I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a book. And make believe it’s really true. I’m gonna write words oh so sweet. They’re going to knock me off my feet. A lot of kisses and a huggin’, I’ll be glad I wrote ’em. I’m gonna smile and say I hope you love him, too. For it’s filled with love oh so fine. I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a hero and make believe he’s really mine… (With lots of apologies to Fred and Joe!)
And if you need a little something sexy to warm you on a cold night and put you in the mood for Valentine’s Day read Ask Me Again.
Rob Miller’s life is on overload. His business is thriving and his life is in fast forward, until he’s called home to deal with a family crisis. The last thing on his mind is romance, but when he bumps into Torrey Timberlake, a face from his past, he’s forced to re-evaluate his priorities. Could she possibly be the best thing that ever happened to him at the worst of times?

I guess this makes you a love ’em and leave ’em sort of gal 😉 You are correct it can be very bittersweet to let our characters who become our friends and loves out into the big bad world. Great post!

I just finished my first draft of Stuck–the novella that is screaming to be a novel–and I’m going to miss my characters so much I may just need to follow them to Kenya. Sigh. At least as a novelist, we can always have a hero in our heads. (And I’m lucky enough to have a nonfictional one climb into bed with me every night!)

Oh, it’s that non-fiction one that is the most important. It’s fun to pretend some gorgeous hunk is wrapping his arms around you but when you’ve got the real thing, life is worth living.

E., you have so much sheer wonderfulness in your head! Mark, the Alpha~Beta hero sounds like everything I love in a man. I’m with you on the “Gingers”, but, I’ve got a few for you to take a look at. How about Olympian Snowboarder, Shawn White, with his newly shorn red hair. He’s bold, beautiful and it seems like he’s growing up a bit. Domhnall Gleeson~actor, is also cute, tall, funny and talented. It’s hard for me to find the young ones “hot”, but they are cute. A younger Eric Stoltz (circa Pretty in Pink) may also get the muse going. 🙂 Can’t wait to read your “ginger” story!

Oh, I love sheer wonderfulness! LOL
I’m still moping the loss of Mark. But he’s doing well. So I really did need a change and considering I have a few female friends with red hair, I’d better make this new guy really special! Shawn cut his hair off? Okay, I’ve got to look at some pics!

Hey, I like your version of that song! I bet you can make the new guy super special like all your other men. *g*

It’s so much fun creating loveable guys. We get to take all the super wonderful things about guys and ignore the not so great qualities. Ever notice that our heroes never snore or sleep as if they were skydiving? They can eat shrimp scampi and still passionately kiss the heroine without her passing out from garlic breath. Just amazing! LOL

In love with your heroes–of course. Always. The latest one is the best until you gave him a rival.
